Asthma is an uncommon disease, and Dr. Wang Qirong, a pediatric specialist at Punggol Pediatric Clinic, part of the Singapore Healthcare Group, advises parents to recognize the symptoms of an asthma attack.
Dr. Wang says that the symptoms or signs of an asthma attack generally include:
■Rapid breathing: Increased respiratory rate and chest retractions. Breathing requires the use of neck or abdominal muscles.
When a child has an asthma attack, parents are advised to remain calm and help the child sit upright, not lie down, as sitting upright helps with breathing. Parents can immediately use a reliever inhaler to help open the airway. If the symptoms do not improve, or even worsen, it is recommended to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

**Important!**
If symptoms appear, even if you are unsure whether it is asthma, do not delay using an inhaler.
Symptoms such as bluish lips or difficulty speaking are emergency signs and should not be ignored.
During an asthma attack, do not give the child cold water or cold food, as this may worsen the symptoms.
