Men over 50 should have their prostate checked annually.

November is Prostate Awareness Month in Singapore. When the prostate has problems, symptoms may include difficulty urinating, a weak or interrupted urine stream, and increased frequency of urination, especially at night (nocturia). Some patients may even find blood in their urine (hematuria).

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder, primarily responsible for producing semen.

Cancer cells typically originate in the outer regions of the prostate and can grow for years without affecting urinary function. Changes are often only noticed when the tumor enlarges or spreads into the urethra. This silent progression explains why regular screening can detect cases before symptoms appear.

Many men delay seeking medical attention because the symptoms of early prostate cancer are similar to those of normal aging or benign prostatic hyperplasia. This overlap makes it difficult to distinguish between the different diseases without proper testing. A PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test, along with a digital rectal exam, can provide baseline information. Starting at age 50, or for those aged 40 to 45 with a family history of prostate cancer, annual prostate cancer screening counseling should be scheduled.
