Patients with age-related macular degeneration often present with a mixture of deficiency and excess. For example, phlegm-dampness may accumulate in the presence of kidney-essence deficiency. Therefore, TCM treatment plans will be adjusted based on the patient's dynamic changes.
Regardless of the syndrome, TCM recommends the following daily regimens:

■ Patients should rest regularly, avoid excessive exertion, and maintain a positive mood.
■ Maintain a moderate diet that is light and nutritious. Consume more dark green vegetables rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, such as spinach and kale, and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Avoid greasy, spicy, fried, or cold foods.
■ For patients with the dry form of the disease, which progresses more slowly, supplementation with trace elements and vitamins is recommended. Oral administration of vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin E is recommended to protect the eye cells.
■ Quit smoking and drinking, as excessive smoking and drinking are major risk factors for macular degeneration.
■ Both solar radiation and visible light can damage the macula. Wear a sun hat when exposed to sunlight to protect the eyes from light damage.
■ Patients who have developed age-related macular degeneration in one eye should strictly monitor their healthy eye and seek prompt treatment if any lesions are detected.
