Free online seminar: Understanding varicose veins and keeping your legs healthy

Do you often stand for long periods of time at work? Have you noticed veins developing in your legs?

The medical name for these veins is varicose veins, which refers to abnormal dilation of the veins (the vessels that carry blood back to the heart). This condition not only affects the appearance of the legs, but if left untreated, varicose veins can worsen and even cause swelling, itchy redness, and ulcers in the feet.

Some people may be more susceptible to varicose veins due to genetic factors (including those passed down from one generation to the next). Occupations requiring prolonged standing, such as street vendors, surgeons, nurses, teachers, police officers, and those working in the service industry, are also at increased risk. Other risk factors include being overweight and gender differences. In women, hormonal changes can weaken the walls of their veins. Furthermore, during pregnancy, the fetus presses on the veins in the abdomen, increasing venous pressure. Consequently, varicose veins in the lower legs are more common in women than in men.
