A medieval tower under renovation in central Rome, Italy, collapsed, killing one and injuring three. The 29-meter-high Conti Tower, built in the 13th century, partially collapsed on Monday morning (November 3rd) during renovations, followed by a second collapse approximately 90 minutes later. Video footage shows rescue workers using ladders to search for survivors during the second collapse; fortunately, no rescuers were injured.
Four workers were trapped after the collapse, three of whom were quickly rescued. A third worker, 66-year-old Romanian national Stroić, was trapped under the rubble for 11 hours. Although he showed vital signs when pulled from the rubble, he succumbed to his injuries early on November 4th in hospital. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation. (AFP)
