Researchers in British Columbia, western Canada, have stumbled upon an incredible hunting method employed by wild wolves. For years, in an effort to eradicate the invasive European green crab, the research team collaborated with local residents, placing crab traps in deep water that remained submerged at low tide. However, they were surprised to find the traps on the shore, the bait gone. In May 2024, they set up cameras and solved the mystery. Footage showed a female wolf swimming to a buoy, dragging it to the shore, and pulling the rope connecting the trap. She pulled the trap up, tore through the net, and retrieved the bait.
Researchers noted that this is a very intelligent and complex behavior, but they are unsure how common this sophisticated hunting technique is among wild wolves. They speculate that this wolf likely figured out how to pull the trap to the shore through trial and error. (AFP)
